Starting an Herb Garden

Every spring I get this idea to plant flowers on my balcony. I get seeds, a pot, soil, and hope for the best. Every summer, my plants die due to the lack of water and the extreme heat. It’s mostly my own fault considering I’m not very good at remembering to water them or take care of them. This year however, I’m hoping to grow my own herbs on my balcony. I’m excited to see the results and use my herbs in new recipes.

One of the best things about my apartment is that my balcony is pretty well shaded so it helps cool my apartment. However, I had to make sure that the herbs I chose could grow in partial sun. Also, with my lack of gardening skills, I didn’t want to grow anything too challenging or invest too much money into it.

So this past weekend, I went to the home improvement store and bought some plant starters and some seeds for oregano, basil, and cilantro. Overall, I’ve invested less than $8 into my herb garden, but that will probably increase once they start growing. When the seeds have sprouted, I’ll need to transplant them into larger pots. I also need to get a higher table or window box to use on my balcony so my herbs can get the most sunlight. But the biggest thing I need to remember is to water them frequently.

My goal is grow my own herbs to use in recipes. This can help me save money on herbs at the grocery store, but also encourage me to try more recipes at home. I want to get my feet wet with the herb garden. Then maybe I can move up to more challenging plants and produce. I’m excited to get started!

Have you ever planted a garden?
