Nest for Less
Apparently, when you’re having a baby, you have the instinct to nest. Nest meaning you spend a lot of time and energy organizing and sprucing up your home. It’s definitely been true for me. As I hit the six-month mark of my pregnancy, it seems all I want to do is redecorate and move furniture around.
However, let’s be realistic. Now is probably not the best time, financially or otherwise, to be spending a lot of money on new furniture and home décor. Thankfully, I’ve come across a number of ways to beautify and freshen up our house without blowing the baby budget:
- Pillows. Pillows are probably the least expensive, and easiest, way to give a room new life. You’d be amazed at how many unique, modestly priced throw pillows are out there.
- Flowers. It’s amazing what fresh (or dried) flowers will do for a room. For $10 or less a week, you can really add some cheer to your home. It’s amazing what having a bright bunch of flowers in your kitchen will do for your mood every morning. I also like to buy dried flowers or branches (like eucalyptus) and put them in vases throughout the house. They last indefinitely!
- Books. Coffee table books that are collections of photographs or art or style guides can be great accessories for any room. I have some stacked on our mantle, coffee table, dresser, and desk. It adds depth and takes away the cookie-cutter feel of a room with just plain furniture in it. The best part is you probably have a bunch of these types of books laying around already, or collecting dust on your bookshelf. Repurpose them. Or, spend $20 for a new one.
My final suggestion, especially if you’re really looking to buy new things, would be to troll flash sale sites like Gilt Home or One Kings Lane. I’ve scored some incredible deals on these sites on everything from throws to art to vases!
