Moving: Amateur or Pro?
When I moved into my first apartment, I didn’t need movers. I didn’t have any stuff! Besides clothes and the few random boxes of kitchen items, towels, and some sheets, my worldly belongings were few and far between.
Three years past, and then, it was time for me to move. I had just gotten married, and frankly, I had grown out of my first place, big time. It was time to move on to bigger and better accommodations. However, I was no longer free of … stuff. Over the time I lived there, I had acquired a good bit of furniture (a bed, a desk, a remarkably heavy pull-out sofa bed, a bookcase, and a large amount of kitchen appliances!) “No problem”, I thought, “Josh and I can handle this.” In my mind, we just needed to recruit a buddy of my hubby’s or two, and we’d be good to go. I rented a truck, packed things into boxes, and then, moving day was upon us.
I had made a terrible mistake. The fact was, some of my furniture was ridiculously heavy and awkward to carry, making maneuvering it down from my 3rd floor apartment to the alley an extreme task. Additionally, I hadn’t gotten a big enough truck… it ended up taking us almost three days and even more trips across town and back to get everything from point A to point B. In the end, we were so unbelievably sore, tired and cranky. I said to myself, “Never again!”
After living in our new place for only a year, my husband and I recently moved again. This time, I didn’t mess around. I did some research, online and asked my co-workers and friends, about moving companies. I decided that we would pack everything on our own, but leave all the lifting and moving to the pros. Yes – it cost us WAY more than doing it ourselves (somewhere in the vicinity of $600, when all was said and done.) However, I didn’t feel anywhere near the stress of the last move, nor the physical ramifications of trying to move my own junk.
